Have you ever gone to a concert where you’ve paid more attention to a backup dancer or musician than the lead singer? I have. And as I listened to Down at Joe’s, I started doing something very similar—I searched for the piano. And this wasn’t because I disliked Waxman’s singing; I listened for those ivories because they bring energy and excitement to the folk-infused pop songs. At times, the piano gets to stand up and take the lead; at other times, it sits in a corner and whispers shyly. And as the notes roll out, they seem to relate their own subtext as they join the vocals. The fun lies in trying to figure out what those keys are saying.

     Another week past and a new song for all of you!!!  Before we get into that, I want to thank everyone who made it out to the earliest set in the history of time (7:30pm) on Friday.  For those who missed it because you were eating or busy doing whatever makes sense at that time, no worries.  We're still set for March 10th in Oshawa and we are working on more K/W booking as we speak.

     We are very happy to release the first song online from the "Play Hooky" EP today, as promised last week.  If you would like full details on "Fall Away" you can visit the message board at www.forthehardway.com and under the "Play Hooky" thread, you can find everything that you need.  Also, we've been having some security issues with the board, we are clearing them up now.  We apologize for the inconvenience and if you are deleted for no good reason, please just let us know and we'll reinstate you.

    It's been quite a hectic week in the FTHW camp, so I'll just get right down to business.  For those who haven't gotten in touch in regards to tickets for Friday, there are a very few left, and you can reserve yours at fthwmusic@yahoo.ca.  Be aware, they are jackin' up the price at the door, so it is really worth your while to get them from us.  This should be a really great show (Quiet Ritual, Torcher, Life Like Rockets, After The Invasion), and in addition to five great bands, it will be the release of the "Play Hooky" EP.  It will be available at our merch table along wtih the debut EP, "Gagner Getaway".

    What's that you say? "Scarfo, I can't make it Friday, it's a joint party for my grandson's 1st birthday and my 29th!" (Okay, maybe that's only an excuse where I come from - Oshawa)*.  While we are greatly disappointed that you would choose your family over us, never fear, the songs will be available online shortly.  As with the "Gagner Getaway", we will be releasing it online one song at a time every two weeks.  The first tune, "Fall Away", will be released online next Tuesday, 10 February, 2009.  For details and lyrics, all info can be found on the message board at www.forthehardway.com under the thread, "Play Hooky".  In the meantime, the track listing appears below:

I'm blogging a little about myself.

I am a singer, mainly, and a songwriter. I also produce music and I write books and paint.

Also, I'm a vegan and into green and ecoizing and sharing info on living well, healthily and beautifully. I have been asked to contribute to magazines and sites, and I happily share info, artwork, and articles, and my time to worthy causes.

Being a compassionate vegan, I also volunteer for wildlife rescue and have at home 12 rescued dogs and cats, and some other species too!

Music is my main thing in life - making it, I mean - and singing my own tunes.

I have a home studio and a mobile one for when I travel, and I prefer for others to engineer so I can concentrate on the particular song adn getting it to sound the way I hear it in my head when I first encounter it - I say encounter, since they just appear in my brain from somewhere like magic. Weird?

 I'm on an island for the winter, doing music, surfing with my dogs, and loving it.

There are reports that we are headed for another great depression, and like children staring through the window, watching for a parent to come home so that they can feel safe again, we wait for the changing of the guard…for a new President and a new administration to step in, wave a magic wand and save us.

So what does all this mean if you are a “struggling” musician today, in spite of everything hoping to realize your dream? Is the prospect of success out the window for you now? To the contrary, things actually aren’t that bad for you!

In times like these, we as a people come together, we unite in common cause, bonding together almost by instinct, like wild animals threatened in the forest. We are all going through something together. This brings with it a wealth of song topics that you can write about, rich in content and even more important - lifting the spirits of others who are bound like chains in today’s seemly hopeless situation.

Now is the time, “your time ”, to write songs of hope, to share your fears and even to create a fantasy world for people to escape to and forget about their daily problems if only for three or four minutes. You can be part of creating that place.

History tells us that during times like the “Great Depression” of the 1920’s and 30’s people did just that…they turned to entertainment for a diversion…in fact, entertainment was one of the only industries that was insulated from the disintegration of other industries, it actually prospered!

Why? Because music is a perfect fit for these kinds of times. It’s great entertainment, some say it’s “the soundtrack of our lives”, and by any other year’s standards, it’s very inexpensive for people to enjoy.

In contrast, to the old system where if you wanted to own original music, you were forced to lay down $17 for a CD, only to find it was otherwise filled with junk.

Today you can hear samples of a track before you buy it and then pick and choose one for virtually any mood for the modest price of $.99, an amount that is not going to make a difference in anyone’s tight budget.

And just like the Berlin Wall and Iron Curtain came crashing down, the “gatekeepers” have “left the building”, and the recording and distribution of music has become anyone’s game via the Net.

So run with it…let your ideas flow without the restriction of “big brother” – the label, who chokes your creative flow, constantly telling you what you can and can’t do. You have a fresh white canvas and you can paint it anyway you like.

Just remember though, like any other time, successful music has to be great so don’t skip over the fundamentals of learning how to make great records. It’s time… it’s “your time”! There is a unique period that happens maybe only once in a century, many only realize it after it’s over. Those who were able to see it and were prepared will be the ones who will prosper.

    Sorry for the two posts in one week, but things are getting a little crazy in the FTHW camp.  Just a note, the entire "Gagner Getaway EP" is now available to hear on our site, and "Beige" is available for free download ...

      I know this is normally a Tuesday thing, but in the last couple of days, we've confirmed a couple of dates coming up.  We will now be playing both the 9th and 10th of January at Circus Room.  The jokes are flying around the jam hall about, "Spend a Weekend with FTHW at Circus Room: Clear Your Schedule!".    Our good friends in Age of Misconduct asked us to fill a spot on their bill on the Saturday, so we will be following up the Friday show with Blue Sky Down with the Age of Misconduct show on Saturday.  We'll be doing our best to make it two radically different sets on both nights so that all those troopers out there who are willing to make it to both shows (you know we love you!!) won't be sitting through the same show twice.

      Also, on 6 February 2009, we will be playing an Arc Clothing show with After The Invasion, Life Like Rockets, Torcher and Quiet Ritual.  This one is at Schwaben Club in Kitchener and door time is 7pm.  Tickets will be $8 at the door, but we can do 'em for $7.  If you want to reserve tickets through us, drop us a line at fthwmusic@yahoo.ca and we'll put aside what you need for you.  All information is available in the show section ... the listings can be found below, so, until Tuesday, swing for the fences, jerks!

     Another week in the FTHW camp and another tune from "Gagner Getaway EP".  We hope that you are all enjoying "The Way" and "Do it to Julia" and now "This Rope Floats" can be heard anywhere that the first two are available.  Just a note, it is available for free download at amiestreet at the moment http://amiestreet.com/music/for-the-hard-way.  "The Way" is also still available for free there, and Julia is up to a whopping 9 cents.  For those unfamiliar to the system at amiestreet, songs start free and after a number of downloads at the free level, it starts to climb in price, with each following download bringing the price up.  The moral of the story - get the song for free while you can!  As always, all of the info for the song is available on the message board at www.forthehardway.com under the "Gagner Getaway EP" thread.

     In current FTHW news, the second EP, "Play Hookey" is coming along very nicely.  All of the instrumental tracks are done as well as Stroker's vocal parts.  As the week progresses, we will be able to finish up the vocals for Tommy Hardway and for Euro and then it's on to mixing and mastering.  As a note, we have another chant-like part (much like the 'heys' in "The Way") and if you would be interested in adding a vocal layer to it and will be in the K/W area, just drop me a line at fthwmusic@yahoo.ca to let us know.

     Also, as noted in the title, we have a show announcement!  After taking so much time off to record, our friends in Blue Sky Down (www.myspace.com/blueskydown) asked us to play a show at Circus Room with them and we were more than happy to oblige.  It is Friday January 9th, at Circus Room and we will be playing with the aforementioned Blue Sky Down as well as Mary 5e.  For more details, check out the show section here.

     We want to start by thanking you guys so much for all of the support and positive feedback on our release two weeks ago of, "The Way".  Just a note, that it is still free to download at our amiestreet site, http://amiestreet.com/music/for-the-hard-way.  Also up there now is our newest release, "Do it to Julia."  Known as the "1984 song" for it's lyrical content referencing George Orwell's work, it is a song rich in FTHW history.  You can find all of the details on the message board at www.forthehardway.com under the "Gagner Getaway EP" thread.  If you want to download the tunes, please do so quickly as they won't be free forever.  Also, we are releasing the photo that will appear on the cover as soon as packaging is complete.

If Sublime and No Doubt had an illegitimate lovechild, it would be named illScarlett. With fist pumping punk/pop/reggae jams, these guys will be your new favourite summer band and with due cause. The Mississisauga natives are prepping for their major record label debut album All Day With It, on SONY BMG MUSIC CANADA INC. set to be released July 10th, 2007.

Back in the day:

Vocalist Alex Norman and drummer Swav Pior met up in high school with visions of becoming rock stars, adding like-minded associates John Doherty (bass) and Will Marr (guitar) to flesh out their musical vision. Raised on the music of artists like No Doubt, Sublime and Goldfinger, illScarlett built the initial framework for their infectious sound by cultivating, shaping and finessing its compositions into its own signature creation.

illScarlett’s hardcore DIY Ethic worked as an effective tool to get the band noticed from the get go. Using old school methods (tirelessly touring their asses off) and new technologies (myspace, youtube, etc.) to initiate the groundswell illScarlett manufactured a solid fan base. The story goes that a few years ago, they pulled into the Warped Tour parking lot, fired up a generator and started playing for the people lined up for the concert with the hopes of selling some of the bands independent, self financed EP’s . This got the attention of Warped founder Kevin Lymon, who invited them to play his nightly post-show party. They killed it, have been guests of the warped tour ever since and we’d like to say ‘the rest is history’

Symphosomatic is the brain-child of Ontario native Adam Bernstein. Having spent time as a drummer for a number of years touring and recording he was often drawn to his guitar for true satisfaction. While always enjoying his time as a drummer his passion for playing guitar and singing his own songs became greater over time. Inspired by the likes of Jeff Buckley, Wilco, Radiohead, and others, writing soon became more of a passion than beats and thus began the genesis of Symphosomatic.

Adam spent 2001 through 2005 living in Seattle, Washington only to have returned to Toronto in July of 2005. It was in Seattle that Adam met Joel Bell who would go on to produce the now released EP, “Circles Round My Mind.” Adam claims that Joel’s contribution was invaluable. Not only did he assume the majority of the production duties he also played some guitar, keyboards, percussion, and sang backup vocals.

After Joel had agreed to work on the EP Adam turned to finding a rhythm section to round out the project. In stepped Devin Lowe (bass guitar) and Sky Christopher (drums). Devin and Sky have a background in jazz which Adam felt would compliment his emotional pop songs well. The foursome was joined on two tracks by pedal steel player Brian Wetzstein, whose skillfully airy playing added that something extra Adam was looking for.

Recording was done at Electrokitty in Seattle and was engineered by owner Gary Reynolds.

Mastering was completed at Abbey Road Studios in London, England by Chris Blair who skillfully added the final touches to the record.

Second...Our newest video, for "A Better Way" is finally done, and we will be posting it on our MySpace and our YouTube Group this coming Monday or Tuesday! So keep an eye out for that. We think it's our best video yet!! And it was a blast having Pfeiffer in the video with us too!

Third....After the parting of Dusty, and a few days of auditioning new drummers (with the help of Pfeiffer), we have finally found a great skin-beater who goes by the name of Legs. We've been jamming out our set with Legs this week, and **** sounds tiiiiiight and rawkin!! Our first gig with him will be in London on St.Paddy's Day! We're gonna tear the roof off that muthfucka! :)

Thanks for having a gander at our tunester page.  We're all looking forward to what's to come for this community.  Should be delightful indeed.  Snoop around on our profile and you'll find some self-recorded songs, lyrics and photos from live shows.  Streetlight Light has been writing music for the past two years in our little grey box of a studio (relatively) far from our home (at Bathurst and College).  We finally began playing live on February 12th, 2007.  So we're pretty fresh out of the gates in that sense, but we've created songs that we're all very proud of and love performing and, to be honest, we've put so much into this and formed our lives to it so intensely that we must succeed in reaching our lofty goals.  We hope you enjoy our music, check us out live and come along with us.
