The new album DOWN AT JOE'S by ADLAI WAXMAN has been selected as an EDITOR's PICK with the staff at CD BABY in the genre Jazz Pop! Adlai Waxman’s songs shine with a style that pushes the boundaries of
piano pop music. Words like, “genuine, eclectic, unique, witty,
sophisticated,” have been used to describe this singer-songwriter’s unique
sound.

Echoes of his influences surface, especially those to whom he has been
compared, namely, Randy Newman, Joe Jackson, Robbie Robertson and Donald
Fagen. Yet his vocal style remains distinct, with his own modern twist.

Music industry legend Jerry Wexler personally called Adlai to offer career
guidance and said, “You can fit in with the best of them.”

Well received by the music industry and fans, his songs climbed to number
one on the CBC radio new music chart. Other contests such as the Mountain
Stage New Song Contest (West Virginia) and the internet American Idol
Underground voted Adlai’s songs among the top ten out of thousands of
world-wide entries.

Dividing his time between Nashville and Toronto, Adlai
earns his keep as a professional musician devoted to the craft of
songwriting and performing.

On this his first full length CD, Adlai's songs touch on many topics,
always with a fresh musical approach. Marshmellow Records is proud to
have Adlai on it's roster and we are sure you will fall in
love with his unique musical perspective.

I have. And as I listened to Down at Joe’s, I started doing something very similar—I searched for the piano. And this wasn’t because I disliked Waxman’s singing; I listened for those ivories because they bring energy and excitement to the folk-infused pop songs. At times, the piano gets to stand up and take the lead; at other times, it sits in a corner and whispers shyly.
Show update and new EP Release!

Howdy folks,

It's been quite a hectic week in the FTHW camp, so I'll just get right down to business. For those who haven't gotten in touch in regards to tickets for Friday, there are a very few left, and you can reserve yours at fthwmusic@yahoo.ca. Be aware, they are jackin' up the price at the door, so it is really worth your while to get them from us. This should be a really great show (Quiet Ritual, Torcher, Life Like Rockets, After The Invasion), and in addition to five great bands, it will be the release of the "Play Hooky" EP. It will be available at our merch table along wtih the debut EP, "Gagner Getaway".

What's that you say? "Scarfo, I can't make it Friday, it's a joint party for my grandson's 1st birthday and my 29th!" (Okay, maybe that's only an excuse where I come from - Oshawa)*. While we are greatly disappointed that you would choose your family over us, never fear, the songs will be available online shortly. As with the "Gagner Getaway", we will be releasing it online one song at a time every two weeks. The first tune, "Fall Away", will be released online next Tuesday, 10 February, 2009. For details and lyrics, all info can be found on the message board at www.forthehardway.com under the thread, "Play Hooky". In the meantime, the track listing appears below:

         1. Fall Away
         2. Just Askin'
         3. Crutch
         4. You Turn
         5. The Way (Acoustic, live at the jam hall)

Again a reminder, make it out to the show and you can get the CD as well as hear it live before anyone else! Another note on shows, if you're in town, check out The Vinyl Revival and SEXDWARF at the Legion in Waterloo on the Saturday night .. you might recognize a face or three.

We're still plugging away at new stuff and getting into a writing/booking cycle again, so look out, the third EP is already in the writing stages ... and the top 3 suggestions for the name of the third EP are:

          3. For The Hard Way - Bed a Sasquatch. (The story behind this is hilarious ... feel free to ask either myself or Ian Park of Snatch.)

          2. For The Hard Way - In The Face

          1. For The Hard Way - Dark Side of the Moon (Okay, I'm lying about that one)

And as always, the three things I've learned this week:

1. Steve-o has now found a new bowling hero in Stroker.
1a. Apparently bowlers can be heroes.
1b. Steve-o needs to rethink his evaluation process for role models.

2. The most efficent way of getting as much cake into your mouth as possible is the chop/shove method. Messy, but efficient.

3. Tommy actually thought we would stop picking on him after a year. Stupid sophomore.

-Scarfo

*Note: For those who were offended by a teen pregnancy joke ("Scarfo, that's not funny!"), I encourage you to spend some time in Oshawa as teen pregnancy is not a joke there. It is merely the breakfast of champions.**
**Note: I was born and raised in Oshawa, I'm allowed to make jokes.***
***Note: If that still isn't enough, feel free to explain why at Johnny B Club on the 10th of March.

Your Time Is Now

Everywhere you look the story is the same…gloom and doom of not only the major labels shrinking grasp of the record business, but for the whole economy. We hear there is massive unemployment, we watch industrial icons like the “big three” automakers fall into financial collapse, blah, blah, blah…. the whole thing is surreal.

There are reports that we are headed for another great depression, and like children staring through the window, watching for a parent to come home so that they can feel safe again, we wait for the changing of the guard…for a new President and a new administration to step in, wave a magic wand and save us.

So what does all this mean if you are a “struggling” musician today, in spite of everything hoping to realize your dream? Is the prospect of success out the window for you now? To the contrary, things actually aren’t that bad for you!

In times like these, we as a people come together, we unite in common cause, bonding together almost by instinct, like wild animals threatened in the forest. We are all going through something together. This brings with it a wealth of song topics that you can write about, rich in content and even more important - lifting the spirits of others who are bound like chains in today’s seemly hopeless situation.

Now is the time, “your time ”, to write songs of hope, to share your fears and even to create a fantasy world for people to escape to and forget about their daily problems if only for three or four minutes. You can be part of creating that place.

History tells us that during times like the “Great Depression” of the 1920’s and 30’s people did just that…they turned to entertainment for a diversion…in fact, entertainment was one of the only industries that was insulated from the disintegration of other industries, it actually prospered!

Why? Because music is a perfect fit for these kinds of times. It’s great entertainment, some say it’s “the soundtrack of our lives”, and by any other year’s standards, it’s very inexpensive for people to enjoy.

In contrast, to the old system where if you wanted to own original music, you were forced to lay down $17 for a CD, only to find it was otherwise filled with junk.

Today you can hear samples of a track before you buy it and then pick and choose one for virtually any mood for the modest price of $.99, an amount that is not going to make a difference in anyone’s tight budget.

And just like the Berlin Wall and Iron Curtain came crashing down, the “gatekeepers” have “left the building”, and the recording and distribution of music has become anyone’s game via the Net.

So run with it…let your ideas flow without the restriction of “big brother” – the label, who chokes your creative flow, constantly telling you what you can and can’t do. You have a fresh white canvas and you can paint it anyway you like.

Just remember though, like any other time, successful music has to be great so don’t skip over the fundamentals of learning how to make great records. It’s time… it’s “your time”! There is a unique period that happens maybe only once in a century, many only realize it after it’s over. Those who were able to see it and were prepared will be the ones who will prosper.
***Photo with Neil Portnow, President of National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS)

Release of "The Way"

Howdy folks,

After what seems like an eternity, the beginning of the release of "The Gagner Getaway EP" is finally here. You can find "The Way" available to stream wherever FTHW exists. It will be available for download in most areas within a week, but if you just can't wait (and the price will be right), you'll want to get it at our amistreet site, http://amiestreet.com/music/for-the-hard-way. If you get it there and like it, please post a recommendation, every little bit helps!!

As posted last week, everything that you ever wanted to know about the song is posted on the message board at www.forthehardway.com under the thread "Gagner Getaway EP". If there is anything that you would like to know and it is not yet there, don't be afraid to post a question. We also want to extend a special thanks to those outside of the band who helped us with the 'heys': Jess, Steve-O, Josh, Deion, Jesse, Tony and Weaver.

In up to date news, it was another good week for FTHW as we put some more polishing touches on "Fall Away" and are still working to create lyrics for the newest song which is now structured. In addition, we're in the process of adding a couple of more covers to the repetoire, news on those to come.

We hope that you enjoy this song, we had almost as much fun making it as we do playing it live. An acoustic live video version of it from a performance in October is available to view at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E_n8bXHLAY. It's a little rough as the concept was something that was only 3 days old at the time (you can still see the lyric sheet in Euro's hand), but it's a neat take on what is likely going to be a FTHW staple song.

-Scarfo

Cut Copy- Melbourne Australia

BIO

Australian indie electronic trio Cut Copy take many of their cues from contemporaries like Air, Daft Punk, and LCD Soundsystem, but with a distinctly pop sensibility that draws on classic AM radio pop singles from the 1970s and '80s, with elements of vintage disco and synth pop that appeal to song-based listeners as well as the club kidz. Cut Copy started in 2001 as a solo project by songwriter, producer, and DJ Dan Whitford, who released the single 1981 and the EP I Thought of Numbers before drafting in other members to fill out his synth and sample-based sound. Bassist and guitarist Tim Hoey and drummer Mitchell Scott debuted on Cut Copy's first full-length album, Bright Like Neon Love, released in the summer of 2004. After several successful singles were spun off the album (including Saturdays, Future, Autobahn Music Box, Time Stands Still and Going Nowhere), Universal's Island Records imprint picked up the trio's international distribution in 2006. Following an inventive Whitford live DJ mix that was released in 2006 as Fabriclive.29 (including such unexpected delights as Ciccone Youth's noisy deconstruction "Into the Groovey" and Roxy Music's suave "Angel Eyes" alongside the usual Goldfrapp and Soulwax), the band proper returned in early 2007 with the new single Hearts on Fire from the new album In Ghost Colors.

The music these days

I am just dong the music thing. It seems like a lot has changed since the Beginning of popular music. Recordings used to be special and now they can be annoying. No one wants to pay for music and it seems like there needs to be change in the way we look at it but perhaps it is the artists with little talent and a lot of business that are killing the art of music. Anyhow I believe that it will change back to good but then back to bad and then good again. Just breathe.

A BIT ABOUT

If Sublime and No Doubt had an illegitimate lovechild, it would be named illScarlett. With fist pumping punk/pop/reggae jams, these guys will be your new favourite summer band and with due cause. The Mississisauga natives are prepping for their major record label debut album All Day With It, on SONY BMG MUSIC CANADA INC. set to be released July 10th, 2007.

Back in the day:

Vocalist Alex Norman and drummer Swav Pior met up in high school with visions of becoming rock stars, adding like-minded associates John Doherty (bass) and Will Marr (guitar) to flesh out their musical vision. Raised on the music of artists like No Doubt, Sublime and Goldfinger, illScarlett built the initial framework for their infectious sound by cultivating, shaping and finessing its compositions into its own signature creation.

illScarlett’s hardcore DIY Ethic worked as an effective tool to get the band noticed from the get go. Using old school methods (tirelessly touring their asses off) and new technologies (myspace, youtube, etc.) to initiate the groundswell illScarlett manufactured a solid fan base. The story goes that a few years ago, they pulled into the Warped Tour parking lot, fired up a generator and started playing for the people lined up for the concert with the hopes of selling some of the bands independent, self financed EP’s . This got the attention of Warped founder Kevin Lymon, who invited them to play his nightly post-show party. They killed it, have been guests of the warped tour ever since and we’d like to say ‘the rest is history’

.

EXCLAIM MAGAZINE ( Toronto) Talk about starting with a bang (pun completely intended)! Torontos fledgling Stereo Dynamite Recordings label is obviously intent on wasting no time in making itself known as a serious contender on the Canadian punk scene. The first release from the label founded by former Monster Voodoo Machine and current Damn 13 front-man Adam Sewell is this debut from Burlingtons the Video Dead and what a way for both the label and the band to announce their respective arrivals. As the title would suggest, Brotherhood of the Dead leans heavily toward the unity hardcore stomp of NYC bands like Biohazard, Madball and Agnostic Front while injecting the sound with more modern dual guitar flourishes and a SoCal sense of melody. Lyrically, the band are more akin to the positive-force punk messages of bands like 7 Seconds. Fans of the aforementioned hardcore bands or Moneen and Strung Out would do well to check it out.

*** VISIT THE STORE TO PURCHASE THE EP OR THE VAULT TO DOWNLOAD MP3s***

Symphosomatic is the brain-child of Ontario native Adam Bernstein. Having spent time as a drummer for a number of years touring and recording he was often drawn to his guitar for true satisfaction. While always enjoying his time as a drummer his passion for playing guitar and singing his own songs became greater over time. Inspired by the likes of Jeff Buckley, Wilco, Radiohead, and others, writing soon became more of a passion than beats and thus began the genesis of Symphosomatic.

Adam spent 2001 through 2005 living in Seattle, Washington only to have returned to Toronto in July of 2005. It was in Seattle that Adam met Joel Bell who would go on to produce the now released EP, “Circles Round My Mind.” Adam claims that Joel’s contribution was invaluable. Not only did he assume the majority of the production duties he also played some guitar, keyboards, percussion, and sang backup vocals.

After Joel had agreed to work on the EP Adam turned to finding a rhythm section to round out the project. In stepped Devin Lowe (bass guitar) and Sky Christopher (drums). Devin and Sky have a background in jazz which Adam felt would compliment his emotional pop songs well. The foursome was joined on two tracks by pedal steel player Brian Wetzstein, whose skillfully airy playing added that something extra Adam was looking for.

Recording was done at Electrokitty in Seattle and was engineered by owner Gary Reynolds.

Mastering was completed at Abbey Road Studios in London, England by Chris Blair who skillfully added the final touches to the record.

Check back often for updates on gigs, news, etc.

An Explorer

Sometimes I wonder whether some people are (even subconsciously) rooting for a global pandemic. Something to break up the routine. Some drama to feed the entertainment/content-hungry populace.

One day I was watching a show on TV where some researchers were out watching a couple of lionesses sleep in mid-day. This is not as exciting as it sounds. Sure, they are beautiful and majestic, and were quite resplendent and golden amid the grasses and wildflowers. The gutted zebra nearby was quite a sight. But cats are cats. They sleep 16 out of every 24 hours.

A gust of wind lifted off the hat of a fellow in a neighboring jeep, and it fell on the grass, just a few feet from the vehicle. This was about 30 feet from the lions, who were lazy, glutted, oblivious sleeping cats. So this guy decides to chance it, and slowly opened the back of the jeep and quietly stepped out to retrieve his hat. I watched this activity intently.

The SECOND the hatless man's feet hit the grass, the lions rose, alert, crouching, staring him down. I must confess at that moment, I was torn. Of course, I didn't want the man to be chased by lions right on camera and ripped to bloody pieces while he screamed for mercy, but then again, he had stepped out of his vehicle right in front of carnivores in the wild, risking his life to get his hat. Luckily for the man in question and my battling conscience, he jumped right back in the jeep, forever abandoning his hat to the Serengeti.

But my point is that I understand the pull of the drama, pain, routine disruption that a kill in Africa, a Hollywood scandal or a global pandemic promises.

I believe a stronger pull exists. Can you imagine if ideas were to infect like viruses? The expression of love? A good laugh? The act of dropping a grudge? The decision to cut the cord of hatred, regret or anger that binds us to another? An act of kindness? A decision to forgive and move on?

For this type of pandemic to start: 1) a new idea must emerge; 2) it must infect humans and cause serious impact; and 3) it must spread easily and sustainedly (continue without interruption) among humans.

If I am infected with a certain idea, an impulse, an irrepressible feeling of lightness and laughter, and pass it on to everyone I casually encounter, who in turn is infected, who in turn passes it on. . .

Of course there will always be those naturally immune to this infection (like the Grinch, born with a heart two sizes too small!) but the rest, the majority, enough, would be touched, reached, infected, inspired. Then what?

Just imagine.

- An Explorer
